About Us

Asia-Pacific Women’s Watch (APWW) is a network dedicated to advocating and monitoring the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA) and the outcome document from the UN General Assembly on Women 2000 or Beijing + 5. It facilitates communication and collaboration among women’s organizations and networks in order to ensure that the commitments and consensus made in Beijing are honored by governments, international organizations, the private sector, civil society and women’s organizations themselves. Among its major activities were the Asia-Pacific NGO Symposium on Beijing + 5 in September 1999 and the Asia-Pacific NGO Forum on Beijing + 10 in July 2004. Held in Thailand, both events were attended by more than 300 and 600 women respectively. APWW actively lobbies the UN, especially in relation to the fifth and tenth year reviews of the implementation of the BPFA.

At present, APWW maintains a group mailing list with almost 700 members. Called apww-meet, it disseminates information on the Beijing + 10 processes organized by the UN. It seeks to help NGOs participate in the review process in an informed and organized way. The apww-meet dealt on the AP NGO Forum, the UNESCAP High Level Meeting on Beijing + 10 and the 49th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women on Beijing + 10. NGO activities on Beijing + 10 in country and internationally are also reported through apww-meet.

APWW is composed of national and regional networks of women’s groups, as well as regional organizations dealing on women’s issues. A Steering Committee defines its thrust and directions, as well as its organizational policies. There are two co-chairs: Patricia B. Licuanan, Ph.D. of the Southeast Asia Women Watch and Eileen Pittaway of the Australian National Committee of Refugee Women. There are focal points for South Asia, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, East Asia and the Pacific. The members of the Steering Committee serve a 3-year term.

The secretariat is hosted by the Women and Gender Institute (WAGI) of the Miriam College, located in Quezon City, Philippines.

It is registered as a non-governmental organization under the laws of the Government of the Philippines.
