Make Your Voice Heard: Pledge Your Support for Maternal Health and the
Millennium Development Goals=20
=20
This month, the United Nations will hold a high-level meeting in New
York to renew commitments to achieving the Millennium Development Goals
and to set out concrete plans and practical steps for action to achieve
the eight health and development related goals by 2015. Yet Millennium
Development Goal 5, to reduce maternal deaths by 75 percent, is the one
Goal on which virtually no progress has been made.=20
The number of maternal deaths each year"550,000"has remained constant
for more than a decade because leaders have not made the investments
needed. Leaders at all levels can save women's lives and improve their=20
health by: * Making sexual and reproductive health and rights a=20
priority in =20
health policies and budgets; =20
* Involving women and young people in policy development and =20
evaluation; and =20
* Speaking out against gender inequality, sexual coercion and =20
violence, and child marriage.=20
Take Action NOW" Please join us by adding your name to this letter from
the White Ribbon Alliance. This action will demonstrate to global
leaders that you will not accept this injustice. The goal is to collect
at least 550,000 signatures to represent the number of women who die
because of pregnancy and childbirth complications each year.=20

The International Women's Health Coalition leads global and local
actions to secure every woman's right to a just and healthy life. We are
creating a world where women are free from discrimination, sexual
coercion and violence, and have access to health services and
information. For more information, visit www.iwhc.org.=20
