Dear Luz Cannot find the e-mails in the minutes. Can you please post/send these separately? Just two quick points. 1. Small point: SG would be happy to try and facilitate the participation of women from Iran. But we need gudiance on how exactly to do this. 2. re the proposed Panel discussion "Women's Movements - Challenges and Future Directions" - As the Asia Regional Coordination Office for the international solidary network Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML) Shirkat Gah would be happy to help coordinate this emphasis. At the same time the network has consistently tried to avoid a division between women affected by Muslim laws and other women and to link women's local struggles with the global women's movement & vice versa and to build bridges and connections between women of differing backgrounds. (Note: the network is not a network of Muslim women, but of women affected by Muslim laws - including women of no faith and those other faiths.) We think it is vital that we share our perspectives and link women because otherwise we tend to fall into the dichotomous trap set by the fundamentalists (either you're with us or against us; either you adhere to what we dictate are the contours of religion and politics or you're outside Islam) of a separate "Muslim" feminism and agenda and of an emphasis on religion rather than the underlying structures and systems of oppression. I am also unsure of where the division will be between the proposed 'Many faces of fundamentalisms' panel and the Women's Movement as currently defined. Somewhere I think it is vital that need to link up global economics with fundamentalism. Finally as expressed in the proposed alternative feminist strategy paper presented by SG at the South Asia Watch, we feel there are 4 over-arching concerns that immediately affect women's movement as well as the specific implementation of the Beijing Platform: neoliberal globalisation policies; militarism; fundamentalisms/extremisms (of all denominations); and of course patriarchy. Somewhere our analysis should address these issues. I attach the final note prepared by diverse women at different meetings, conversations and communications that was also circulated at the current CSW. This is a discussion rather than a 'position' and it wouldbe nice to have a discussion on whether and how this is relevant to people's struggles in Asia as well as beyond. Thanks for all the hard work keeping this moving and on track in solidarity Farida ----- Original Message ----- From: "luz" <luz@isiswomen.org> To: <apww-meet@isiswomen.org> Sent: Tuesday, March 09, 2004 4:00 PM Subject: [APWW-Meet] Convener's Group Minutes > Dear APWW-Meet Members: > > So sorry for taking such a long time to get these minutes out--but here > they are. > > Attached are the minutes to the first Convener's Meeting that was held on > February 13-14 in Bangkok. > > Please go through the minutes and if you have questions or suggestions, > please feel free to post them on this list.
