Organized by the Asia Pacific Women’s Watch (APWW) in junction with the 54th. Session of the UN Commission on Status of Women Salvation Army, New York, USA, 8 March 2008, 6:00-7:00PM Hasina Safi, Executive Director, Afghanistan Women’s Education Centre
Let me first present my warmest greetings on behalf of the STRONG women of Afghanistan. Allow me to express my thanks to our sponsors that made our participation to this meeting a reality – the United Nations family in Afghanistan (UNIFEM, UNDP, UNFPA, and UNAMA), and to all those that made this side event possible, especially to the Asia Pacific Women’s Watch (APWW). Without the support of these organizations, the participation of Afghan Women’s Network (AWN) will not be possible. It is very important for us to gather here in today – a place where the movers and shakers in the women’s movement at all levels come together to forge strong and innovative partnerships in pursuit of gender equality and women’s empowerment issues.

Acknowledging and recognizing the hard work and struggles of many women who have walked with us to this point and paying tribute to those who have passed on, we, close to 700 women and girls representing women’s movements from the Asia and Pacific Region, reaffirm the Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA) as a strategic document for women and girls empowerment, human rights, peace, human security and gender-inclusive development and as a key tool for advancing government’s commitments to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
